The Dongers Club – July 24th (Early)

Four game early slate notes, both sites have the same four games, which is shocking.

  • Yankees at Red Sox
  • Braves at Phillies
  • Padres at Marlins
  • Nationals at Orioles

WEATHER

All four games more than good to go

 

There are two “obvious” plays to me on the early slate and then there are two longshot plays.  The longshots are not ones that I am overly comfortable with as they are Ryan Weathers and Vincent Velasquez.  Weathers just doesn’t pitch long enough to outweigh the full upside of Max or Eovaldi but with only a couple other options out there I can see a senario where Max or Eovaldi get hit and Weathers is close but at a reduced price, so he has that going for him.  Velasquez is the one I would have much greater interest in using.

But really, it’s Nathan Eovaldi, who has dominated the Yankees and Max Scherzer who are the fast track options to getting a combined 35 points from pitching on the early slate, which is honestly what your reasonable expectations should be.  Baltimore will hit Max, but they’ll also strikeout 8+ times vs him.

I want no part of the Padres/Marlins game offensively, so cross that one off and it’s a shame both SP in that game probably don’t go very deep.

There isn’t a clear advantage anywhere in terms of weather for the other three games but all are solid and all are in good hitting conditions from a park perspective.  The Nationals tearing up Matt Harvey off him having a good last start and the Nationals losing last night is the most obvious thing in the world and I don’t see much of a path around it.  So let’s identify the other top spots to target and let’s start immediately with the Phillies led by Hoskins-Harper-Realmuto against Smyly.

Boston would be the next target, Rafael Devers is tearing up the Yankees per usual and the value of Kike Hernandez (Also known as Enrique), Jarren Duran and Alex Verdugo are extremely tempting today.
