Sunday Dongers Club – May 8th

Happy Mothers Day to the Mom’s and this is the 2nd of 3 Sunday “Holiday” slates, which always seem to have some weirdness to them.  Yeah, it’s not really a Holiday, but you get the idea.  Today’s weirdness is that there are quite a few double headers to make up for the rain games and also a very short Sunday slate with a good amount of west coast games that are obviously not included because they recognize we like to Tilt and then Tilt-Tilt on Sunday’s.

Lets go find some more grand slams, shall we?  Thank you Soler and Margot!

WEATHER

All the games scheduled for the slates should play.  There is a chance of some rain in Minnesota but it should be gone by first pitch.

It’s also cold still and it’s May 8th for crying out loud.  Ridiculous.

Advantage to about 80% of the pitchers today, but it doesn’t mean just pick anyone because there’s a few specific guys with lots of upside.

GERRITT COLE

Neither the Yankees or the Rangers have swung bats against live pitching since Wednesday.  That’s a long lay off for the Rangers to wait and then come out and face Cole who generally has pitched well as a Yankee at home in day games.  Texas wasn’t doing too much offensively either in their previous games before the rain outs and I would much rather have Cole at home vs them than Manoah on the road vs a pesky Cleveland team.

CHARLIE MORTON

My eleanor, ole Chuck.  Last year I kept stacking against him waiting for his demise and failed while this year I have trusted him only to see him fail.  Let’s try it again one more time today against a free swinging Brewers team who finally met their match in Max Fried last night and now Morton is a pitcher they have also struggled against.

Command has been a little off for Morton but he seemed to show signs of getting the old arm loose around the third inning last game when he went 99 pitches and 28 batters deep vs the Mets.  Milwaukee’s got some hot bats, but they have some strike-out bats as well.

I expect Morton to be among the top 3 SP on this slate.

CHRIS PADDACK

CP2pitches or CP3 and 0 count as he could also be known has been decent as a Twin this season much to my surprise.  The difference has been his evolution to trust his breaking ball and he will be one of the more popular/chalky pitchers against the coldest offense in baseball — Oakland.  The Athletics have managed to score just 1 more run than the Kansas City Royals have since Tuesday — and the Royals have played just one game in that stretch.

Simply put, you can go with Paddack vs the Athletics or you can trust Jordan Lyles vs the Royals for a “facing a shitty team” pick today.  Paddack is the more reliable option here but Morton is the contrarian pivot in my mind.

Sunday Sleeper … A pitcher who is cheap and someone we would almost never consider but sometimes teams are weird in get away games allowing for these lesser caliber guys to perform well.

As I mentioned above, we have teams who haven’t swung a bat against live pitching since the middle of the week and in the Royals case one could argue they haven’t swung a bat against live pitching since the Obama Administration.  Neither guy here will walk out with 6 or 7 strikeouts and so there’s no reason to game stack the pitchers, but either one is a cheap option if you are into that sort of thing today.   Personally, we don’t need the cheap SP in my mind, so this is just a 3rd lineup type option.

In a seven game slate you would hope that there are at least 3 or 4 teams that could put up more than 4 runs.  But honestly, I don’t see it that much today outside of very specific spots.  With so many teams being in bad hitting conditions, facing good pitching or just being ice cold it’s likely to be another quiet offensive day.

This of course assumes Baseball doesn’t have special “Mothers Day” baseballs shipped to each of the stadiums.

TIGERS

Certain pitchers do not have back to back to back good starts in them and Jake Odorizzi is that guy at this point in his career.  His last two starts combined have resulted in 13 IP, 5 Hits and 1 ER allowed.  That blows up today on him.

Houston should get into a mediocre Detroit bullpen as Wily Peralta (they just saw him on Thursday for 2 IP also) is getting the opening nod to start things off before a Bullpen game.  This is a usual suspects game for the Astros and Jose Altuve seems to be riding a little birthday weekend heater right now.

There really is not much offense today, so while Spencer Torkelson is getting a second chance from me I also want to remind you that Vlad Guerrero Jr does not suck and is facing a guy named Konnor Pilkington.  A former 3rd round pick of the White Sox who the Guardians are throwing out there today to open things up.  Seems like that won’t end well…
