QB TARGETS

Normally I would honestly say there’s a good 10-14 Quarterbacks who are more than fine based upon where you spend in draft or auction capital to get them. Not the case this year, the list is actually longer but there is a clear top tier that I would prefer to have. I’ve never been one to pay for that first QB unless it’s within an Auction format where you can balance things out elsewhere, so Patrick Mahomes while the best, doesn’t get me to draft him enough as I probably should. There are three Quarterbacks specifically that I am very much “IN” on this season and none of them are the “rushing” QB who I will touch on after these 3.

Justin Herbert

A lot of analysis has been done on higher profile 2nd year Quarterbacks and how they improve from year 1 to year 2. On average, 2/3 of QB will improve their completion percentage, yards per game, touchdowns and reduce interceptions in their second full season as signal caller. This is going to apply to Herbert, Burrow (Below) and Tua in 2021 but it’s Herbert who we have to be most optimistic about right now.

The weapons in this offense are endless with Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Jalen Guyton, Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson, Joshua Kelly and Jared Cook giving them a very deep set of weaponry to work with. It might not have the full depth of star talent up top but trust me that is a very good group who should allow this offense to thrive.

The Chargers have brought in Joe Lombardi to be their offensive coordinator. Lombardi has been a long time Saints assistant — and yes he is the grandson of Vince Lombardi. Joe was with the Saints for all but two years since 2007 and has said multiple times that he is looking to install many of the same concepts in this offense with the Chargers. And you know what, he has the exact tools to do it as well. Some of the historical trends with Sean Payton’s offense in New Orleans have included

Designing and calling Passing and Running plays out of the same formation (Payton was doing this long before McVay in LA)
Utilizing 2+ Running Backs on a rotational basis to keep them all fresh (Ekeler, Jackson, Kelly)
Lots of 11 personnel (1 TE, 1 RB)
Attacking with 20+ yard shot plays off play action to a big WR (Mike Williams)

But all of this is centered around the Quarterback being the one who produces in fantasy. With the physical tools that Herbert has, a nice balance of weapons and a scheme that should fit him very well I expect Herbert to have a season which will vault him to the top of 2022 fantasy draft boards.

Russell Wilson

Most have him ranked 7th or 8th behind Dak, Kyler, Josh Allen and Lamar and even with Aaron Rodgers. Which is just funny because we know that Wilson is going to be there for 17 games. He has been a healthy QB his entire career who is mobile but smart with how he uses his legs to avoid pressure and extend plays. He has two excellent Wide Receivers and DK Metcalf is going to absolutely ball out this season giving him that top 10 capable fantasy asset to correlate with. Beyond that though the Seahawks are an offense which has made a few tweaks on the offensive line in an effort to be more consistent and drafted speedy MAC star D’Wayne Eskridge who is going to compete with Freddie Swain for the third WR in an offense which should utilize 11 personnel quite often.

Long story short on RW3 is that he will once again push 40+ touchdowns, throw for 4000+ yards and give you 500+ yards rushing along the way

Joe Burrow

Back in the spring I was looking forward to jumping in on Burrow for this season as my QB, but as time has passed I’ve calmed down expectations somewhat. He’s another 2nd year QB, who fits into the category of someone that should compile statistics because his teams defense is terrible and the team has no running game. But generally I would prefer an offense with a solid ground attack for consistency purposes and there will no doubt be some ugly weeks with Burrow. If I cannot get Wilson or Herbert then I will default to waiting on QB and going with Burrow instead.

Justin Herbert – He will finish top 5 QB
Russell Wilson – He will finish top 5 QB
Joe Burrow – He will finish top 10 QB

Late Sleepers / QB2

Tua Tagovailoa
Jameis Winston … Eventually Winston will take over as the regular in game QB unless he just falls flat on his face, but there will no doubt be games where it’s split between him and Taysom as it stands right now.
Baker Mayfield … Baker isn’t a sleeper but there isn’t someone who you can pin the QB2 fantasy label on better than him. You know what you’ll get and you just hope that one 5 TD game he has is on the week when you need to start him.
Trey Lance … Worth a late flyer on but likely more trust worthy if he is your QB3.

Justin Herbert

My opinions on the rookie Quarterbacks

Trey Lance will wind up being the best of the main four guys, I have felt this way since last fall. Justin Fields will be just okay but is going to perform at his peak early and then in 3 years everyone will be wondering what the next level is for him. Trevor Lawrence will be great in 3 years and is not someone I am panicking on if he starts slow. And Zach Wilson needs to make it in the league beacuse his Mom being a Cougar in New York is the entertainment we are all here for.
