Genesis Scottish Open
I apologize for last week, but sometimes life gets in the way. I doubt Renner wants to start paying me six figures so I have to do my day job. I will always try to get you all something each week when I’m traveling, even if it is just some plays on Discord. Always remember, if you have a question, you can get me on Discord. We are beginning a couple of my favorite weeks in the season. I’ve always wanted to travel across the pond to play in the Scotland/Ireland/England area but, unfortunately, have never had the chance. I’m also glad that the PGA & DP World Tour decided a couple of years ago to make this a co-sanctioned event. It makes for a much better field and, frankly, gets rid of the “he traveled across the Atlantic this week” excuse for guys that don’t play well in The Open – at least the higher-ranked players.
We are playing The Renaissance Club this week. It’s a links style course along the coast of the North Sea so we will likely have some weather to deal with. Weather will definitely play a role in scoring. Without the wind and/or rain, this should be an easy scoring course. However, it’s rare that we see “no issues with the weather” being the statement at the opening of the broadcast for an event in Scotland.
Highlights: The Renaissance Club
- Par 70 – 7,250 yards (sorry, one of my sources showed it as a Par 71)
- Large Mounds, Deep Bunkers, and tall Gorse Rough
- Fescue Greens (similar to Bentgrass)

Because of the field, you can see that some really good stats-players also have exceptional pricing. This is going to be a tough week to decide who to play and what style of lineup to play.

$9,000 and Above
My favorites are:
Course History:
Xander Schauffele ($10,400) – Played twice – 2 Top 10s (and a Win)
Matthew Fitzpatrick ($9,800) – He’s the only one in this price range to have played every year here and he’s T6-T2-T42-T14
Tyrrell Hatton ($9,600) – 3 out of 3 on made cuts and all are Top 25. When you play here, Tyrrell is a good pick. And, by here, I mean this area. As long as “Hulk Hatton” can keep calm and play, you’ll see his name on the weekend.
Gut/My Favorites:
Xander Schauffele ($10,400) – For the reason above and the fact that, statistically, he’s playing at the top of his game right now.
Scottie Scheffler ($11,600) – I hate the price, but there is no way you can’t try to play him in at least one lineup this week. Plus, with the pricing, it’s not that ugly with who you can get. There is definitely one value-saver I’m going to pick and his name was already mentioned in this article.
Rickie Fowler ($9,500) – I’m not leaving the Rickie-train until he gives me a reason…especially when he’s $2,100 cheaper than Scottie.
Rory McIlroy ($10,900) & Patrick Cantlay ($10,200), Tommy Fleetwood ($9,400), Shane Lowry ($9,100) will also see some of my lineups this week.
$7,500 to $8,900
You can go stars-and-scrubs or balanced this week. If you choose balance, you can live here or in the Top Tier and the tiers below – well, at least one Tier below:
- Ludvig Aberg ($8,200)** – I like this guy and he’s pretty cheap for the way he’s been playing. 4th-T40-T24-T24!
- Justin Rose ($8,700)** – like Tyrrell, he plays well in his home area. However, with Rose, you don’t have to worry about a temper-tantrum ruining his round – just a sloppy putter now and then.
- Adam Scott ($8,100) – Anyone else seeing a theme here?
- Justin Thomas ($8,300) – Really? $8,300? I know he’s been sucking the wind out of good lineups lately, but I’ll take a chance at this price because we all know he’s working on correcting the problem. And, how big of a problem could it be?
- Tom Kim ($8,500) – Much like JT, he’s going to right the ship at some point. I think it will be sooner rather than later. He didn’t shoot a terrible score at The Rocket Mortgage (-2), but the cut was so low, you couldn’t stumble at all. How many times can you get TK and JT in a lineup and still have $33,200 to spend?
$7,000 to $7,400
Yes, if you have to, you have options:
- Alexander Bjork ($7,300)** – You saw his name in the statistical check above. He’s made the cut each time he’s played here. Now, current form? T4-T8-T9-T6-T29-T4-4th-T14-T16! Check! And Check!
- Padraig Harrington ($7,100)** – Yes, I know he’s old! Yes, I know he’s still one hell of a player! Realistically, there aren’t many guys in this Tier playing a lot better than him right now and definitely not those priced below him.
- Joost Luiten ($7,100) – He’s priced the same as Padraig so I don’t mind swapping him out for Paddie. He’s made his last 8 cuts and has Top 10s in his last two events.
- Robert Macintyre ($7,400) – At this price, there is a lot of potential for upside with Macintyre.
- Eric Cole ($7,400) – I’m hoping he continues his solid play. He ran out of gas a little last week, but has 6 Top 25s in his last 11 events.
Under $7,000
“Scrub Zone”… maybe –
- Daniel Hillier ($6,900) – Don’t know much about him but he has been playing well on the DP World Tour. Win-T3-MC-T5 in his last four events. Now, if you have a win on any Tour, you can PLAY!
- Marcel Siem ($6,600) – T10-T23-T73-T2-T60. Three Top 25s in that span. Who wouldn’t be willing to pay $6,600 for a potential Top 25. And, if you pair him with Bjork and Hillier, you have $9,700 per player for the other three. Hell, I may do that on a low-dollar entry just for shits-and-giggles!
- Matthieu Pavon ($6,800) – he’s made the cut here the last three years and is in solid form coming in.
- Ross Fisher ($6,300) – This may be England’s version of JT! He’s too good of a player to continue to be priced down here for any reason. A T8 last week at the Made in HimmerLand event gives me hope that this can also be a beneficial salary-saver.
LONGSHOT(S)
Alexander Bjork ($7,300)
Yeah, I repeated myself too much a couple of weeks ago. For all the reasons above, I’m calling it. Definite Top 25! Probably Top 10!
Thriston Lawrence ($6,800)
He’s been up and down this year making only about 60% of his cuts. However, he won a few weeks ago at the BMW International Open on the DP World Tour. If a guy can win on any Tour, a price tag below $7,000 is promising!
