CFB DFS Tailgate: Aug 31

I really hate early season College Football DFS slates because of what we have today and somewhat on Saturday’s MAIN slate as well.

Tonight DraftKings has loaded up with an 11 game MAIN slate and honestly it should be around a 5 game slate which would be just FINE.

My cousin played football in High School at a fairly high level but wound up in a horrible car accident his Senior Year, he wound up going to Elon, he doesn’t even give two shits about Elon Football.  Neither should we.

North Carolina A&T?  More like North Carolina  DNP.

Rhode Island?   RHOSE ISLAND?  Maybe in Basketball, but cmon.

And I don’t even want to know what the Saint Francis Red Flash football mascot is supposed to be, a Friar?

WAKE FOREST

Wake isn’t expected to be great, but I think there’s a TON of DFS value with Sophomore QB Mitch Griffis who did just fine in his early start a year ago vs VMI and now gets similarly bad Elon to carve up.  Griffis knows the system and should be able to step in and put up some big numbers when facing lesser teams.

  • QB – Mitch Griffis – 8300
  • WR – Taylor Morin

UCF KNIGHTS

At least we can justify that their opponent is a legit team.  Well, nevermind, it’s Kent State.  They’re a much different team as they lost a ton of talent and coaches through the transfer portal after a few good seasons.  UCF on the other hand comes in with a proven dual threat option in John Rhys Plumlee who is certain to gain heavy ownership tonight with value everywhere.

Much like Caleb Williams last Saturday, there is a depth of WR options for Plumlee with Javon Baker, his top returning WR being $8000 and likely the fade, Kobe Hudson at 7700 makes a good amount of sense here and if you want to take a longshot Xavier Townsend at $4800 doesn’t need much to payoff

  • QB – John Rhys Plumlee – $10,600
  • WR – Xavier Townsend – $4,800

Mitch Griffis (Wake Forest)

I love the system here and see no reason they won’t try to post a 40 or 50 spot tonight.  Take Griffis who will establish his role as the new Wake QB for good tonight.

John Rhys Plumlee (UCF)

Chalky, likely high floor, makes sense to jam in JRP today but it is a good QB depth slate, so I can see logic on some of the pivots but who else is as sure of a thing to do well?  He loves to stat pad in easy games too

  • Darren Grainger (Georgia State)

Sean Tyler (Minnesota)

Former Western Michigan transfer coming in and filling some big shoes at RB for the Gophers, but it’s been a productive position over the years and should be here against Nebraska as well.

Jermaine Brown (UAB)

The Blazers passing game is my contrarian spot here tonight but the ground game for a lead RB that had a good finish in 2022 at $6,200 is not a bad spot to invest in either.

RJ Harvey (UCF) & Justice Ellison (Wake)

I don’t mind Harvey (UCF) and Ellison (Wake) as game stack options for UCF/Wake or just blind pivots off the QB’s as well.

Montrell Johnson (Florida)

To me the big news is Cameron Rising being OUT for Utah int his ‘top’ game on the slate from a viewership standpoint.  This could open up some quick punts by Utah in my mind, giving Florida more possessions and maybe a steal on a red-zone turnover here allowing Johnson to find paydirt.

Also Consider:

  • Cam Skattebo (Arizona State)

Taylor Morin (Wake)

Top play on the slate in my mind.  He’s a veteran in the offense and had connection with Griffis a season ago — not to mention they are from the same area.  Expect him to have a 17+ DK FPT game easily.

Javon Baker, Kobe Hudson, Xavier Townsend (UCF)

Your chalk at WR and you can probably afford any of them but Townsend is obviously the value option here.

 Xavier Guillory (Arizona State)

There’s going to be some ownership going to Jaden Rashada, and he will definitely be throwing the ball against Southern Utah who was not a top pass defense in FCS last year.  We’ll probably see transfer Guillory get fed some big plays but Badger is the returning #1 who saw 24% target share a season ago and should be able to have a solid game at low ownership.

update:  badger is out the first half tonight don’t play

Tejhuan Palmer (UAB) – $4,600

UAB has a new coaching staff led by Trent Dilfer, who brought in Chris Mortenson’s son to run the offense.  If you are new coaches at any level, the first thing you do is lean on the guys who have been here before.  Palmer is the best of the returning bunch and should prove to get most of the looks.

DRAFTKINGS CORE

QB – Mitch Griffis (Wake)

RB – Sean Tyler (Minn)

WR – Taylor Morin (Wake)

LINEUP CONSTRUCTION

WR is deep here, but I would lean going two QB in Super Flex then a 4th WR in the FLEX

BETS

A lot of the FCS games do not have totals, no plays tonight.
