PGA Dew Sweeper: Valero Open

Valero Texas Open

Last week kinda sucked!  Even with five guys tied at the top at one point, I really couldn’t stay focused on the tournament.  Part of that, I’m sure, were the Elite 8 games going on, but the biggest think right now is the looking forward to The Masters.  Which, of course, I won’t get to watch much of because my son is playing in a travel basketball tournament in Pittsburgh that weekend.

Highlights:  TPC San Antonio (Oaks Course)

  • Par 72 – 7,438 yards
  • Fairways are narrow (accuracy off the tee is important)
  • Greens are Bermuda (overseeded with POA)
  • Biggest equalizer?  WIND!!!  It’s Texas

NOTE:  All pricing is based on DraftKings

** are my favorites in each category – could be pricing or the fact I think they play best.

$10,000 and Above

Four guys!  Yep, the pattern continues.

  • Rory McIlroy ($12,300) – Definitely the cream of the crop but, how interested will he actually be with The Masters next week and another attempt at the Career Grand Slam? I’m probably avoiding the $1,700 premium with the possibility of an early exit to get to Augusta.
  • Hideki Matsuyama ($10,600) – He playing very well and this isn’t an outrageous price. It’s higher than we’ve been paying for him, but it’s fine.  Not my favorite though.
  • Ludvig Aberg ($10,500) – THIS, this is my favorite!  For any of you that have been following me for several years, you will get this comparison.  Ludvig is my new Ian Poulter!  If he’s playing, I’m probably picking him!
  • Collin Morikawa ($10,100) – He’s not in Morikawa form just yet.  I’m probably avoiding him, but he could very well finish Top 10.  Although, it could be an either/or.  Top 10 or Missed Cut!

For those of you who don’t know, my time is limited this time of year – yes, I’m an accountant too!  I will do my best to get a more thorough Masters article out next week though.

$9,000 to $9,900

  • Corey Conners ($9,400)** – my favorite here due to course history
  • Ben An ($9,000)**
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick ($9,700)
  • Tommy Fleetwood ($9,200)

$8,000 to $8,900

  • Billy Horschel  ($8,900)** – he’s looked good over the last month
  • Alexander Noren ($8,700)** – I’m really liking his play for this price
  • Harris English ($8,300)
  • Adam Scott ($8,500) – like the Aussie’s ability to play in the wind

$7,000 to $7,900

  • Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($7,900)**
  • Aaron Rai ($7,800)**
  • Maverick McNealy ($7,400)
  • Mark Hubbard ($7,000) – no missed cuts this year

Under $7,000

  • Andrew Novak ($6,500)**
  • Max Greyserman ($6,500) – solid since late February
  • Alejandro Tosti ($6,300) – hoping he continues from last week’s strong play
  • Matthias Schmid ($6,300) – Last 4?  T21-17-T26-T10!

$6,000 & Under (They made me do it)

  • Chandler Phillips ($6,000)**
  • Chan Kim ($5,900)
  • Erik Barnes ($5,900)

Longshot(s)

  • Lanto Griffin ($5,400) – Made the cut here every time he’s played and has made 5 of his last 6 cuts this season.  At this price, that’s all you can expect.

CORE PLAYS (Listing 6 – Maybe play 3):

Scottie Scheffler is a CORE in every way possible, but I’m excluding him from here because of the price.

  • Ludvig Aberg ($10,500)
  • Corey Conners ($9,400)
  • Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($7,900)
  • Matthias Schmid ($6,300)
  • Andrew Novak ($6,500)
  • Tommy Fleetwood ($9,200)

Under the cap!  FYI – I’m going light AGAIN this week!
