RBC Canadian Open
First, condolences to the family and friends of Grayson Murray. It’s always hard for me to understand when someone takes their own life, but I suppose that’s because I’ve been fortunate enough to never have to deal with it or the “darkness” around it. Still, prayers to the family.
So, with that, back to the PGA Tour. We’ve decided to “cross the border, eh!” No, not that one, the one to the North where everything is a bit more organized and a lot less controversial. Can a Canadian repeat?
Remember folks, I won’t be doing an article next week since I’m on a short vacation between trips for travel soccer and basketball. They say I’ll miss it once the kids are done. I’m sure I will, but my 56-year-old ass is tired of hotels!
Much like the U. S. Open, the Canadian Open does not play the same course year after year. In fact, we are returning to Hamilton Golf Club for the first time since 2019. Rory won that year. Last year, Nick Taylor won at Oakdale. Remember, Adam Hadwin got tackled running onto the 18th to congratulate him? Oops! Sort of like the PGA a couple of weeks ago but with more violence!
Hamilton GC was massively renovated since the 2019 tournament so course history (although limited) may not be the best predictor.
Highlights: Hamilton Golf Club
- Par 70 – 7,084 yards
- Fairly large greens (6,000 sf average)
- V8 Creeping Bentgrass Greens (does that mean tomato juice was used?)

$10,000 and Above (in my order of preference)
- Rory McIlroy ($12,100) – A bit more reasonable for the top guy than we’ve seen in weeks with Scottie. Plus, he’s playing great! He’s only been outside the Top 25 once in his last eight events!
- Shane Lowry ($10,100) – there are a couple of “more popular” names above him but his play is equal to them and, although renovations occurred, he did finish tied for 2nd here in 2019.
- Sahith Theegala ($10,500)
- Tommy Fleetwood ($10,300)
Theegala & Fleetwood could both very well pop up and win this thing. However, there consistency will make you want to play them. I just need to see them close one before I get my hopes up over the other two in five figures.
$9,000 to $9,900 (Ranking all the guys in my order of preference)
- Alexander Noren ($9,900) – love the way he’s playing right now. In fact, I may/will have a lineup that starts with him as the highest-priced player and ignore the top tier. I said “one lineup” folks! Don’t take that as a fade.
- Corey Conners ($9,500) – giving a “home country” bump to Corey.
- Cameron Young ($9,800)
- Adam Scott ($9,000)
- Maverick McNealy ($9,200)
- Sam Burns ($9,400)
$8,000 to $8,900
- Aaron Rai ($8,900)**
- Adam Hadwin ($8,500)** – Canadian bump again.
- Tom Kim ($8,600) – I think he’s back to the “consistent player” again.
- Erik van Rooyen ($8,200)
- Akshay Bhatia ($8,100) – I like him, BUT, with two straight missed cuts, I don’t trust him as much as the other four.
$7,000 to $7,900
- Davis Thompson ($7,800) – probably the best current form in this tier
- Mark Hubbard ($7,900) – Mr. “I haven’t missed a cut in a while”!
- Ryan Fox ($7,300)
- Robert Macintyre ($7,100)
Under $7,000
- Seonghyeon (SH) Kim ($6,800)**
- Matt Kuchar ($6,800) – signs of life with a T17 last week. T4 here in 2019 and the course isn’t long. Matt’s not short off the tee, but he is getting older.
- Kevin Tway ($6,700) – he may be my Longshot this week – or one of them. He’s playing about as well as anyone and is priced low. T24-DNP-T43-T9-T11-3rd.
- Patton Kizzire ($6,300)
$6,000 & Under
- Parker Coody ($6,000)
- Joel Dahmen ($5,800) – not killing it, but made FIVE cuts in a row. At this price, that’s all you need.
- Pierceson Coody ($5,700) – T5 last week. Has to keep up with his brother! How cool would it be to have a winning lineup with twin brothers in it? Too bad Rasmus isn’t playing or we could go Coody-Coody-Hojgaard-Hojgaard and fill in the gaps. Hell! I do that just for the fun of it…just not more than a $20 lineup.

- Kevin Tway ($6,700) – See above!
- Mac Meissner ($6,500) – His talent may be adjusting to the grind of the Tour. T5-T13-MC-T23-MC-T10-MC-T26-T23 in the last three months.
