Charles Schwab Challenge
How was that for exciting! Valhalla is an exceptional course! However, I will be honest. I only really got to see parts of rounds #1 and #2 and weekend highlights since I have kids that play travel sports. It was basketball this past weekend, soccer this coming weekend and basketball again the following. I’m then on a 4-day “vacation” before starting it again. Speaking of which, you probably won’t get an article for The Memorial since I’ll be without a computer for those days…or at least not long enough to give you any insight. I may be on Discord so drop some questions there if you like. I should be able to get access on my phone.
This week, we move to Texas. Colonial Country Club is a historic course, but it was renovated and restored following last year’s tournament so it may be a little difficult to anticipate some results. All in all, we have a lot of good names here for the week after a Major. No Xander, but “Lock and Load” and Morikawa aren’t taking a week off.
Highlights: Colonial Country Club
- Par 70 – 7,289 yards
- Bentgrass Greens (fast)
- Narrow Fairways
- Somewhat difficult rough and tree-lined fairways
- 6 holes have water in play

$10,000 and Above (in my order of preference)
- Scottie Scheffler ($13,300) – Even with a rap sheet, he’s still the best golfer in the world right now! Not winning last week? So what! T3 & 2nd in last two years here and 5 out 6 Top 5s in current play (T8 last week after the legal debacle).
- Max Homa ($10,400) – the only reason I like Scottie more (even at the extreme price) is because, well, it’s Scottie.
- Collin Morikawa ($11,000) – He’s definitely rounding back into form.
- Jordan Spieth ($10,600) – I should like him more than I do given his history here and how well he usually plays in Texas in general. My confidence level just isn’t there…and neither is his consistency.
$9,000 to $9,900 (Ranking all the guys in my order of preference)
- Tony Finau ($9,900)
- Si Woo Kim ($9,600) – don’t care that he missed the cut last week.
- Harris English ($9,000) – in this group, he’s the most consistent right now.
- Tom Hoge ($9,300) – If not for English, he would be.
- Brian Harman ($9,500)
- Min Woo Lee ($9,700) – he’s been a pleasant surprise but this may be too high of a price.
- Adam Scott ($9,200) – he’s my Jordan Spieth in this tier.
- Sungjae Im ($9,400) – he used to be an auto-play for me but he needs to regain my trust also.
$8,000 to $8,900
- Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($8,900)** – his worst round in months cost him the cut last week (and only by one stroke).
- Keegan Bradley ($8,100)**
- Thomas Detry ($8,000)
- Justin Rose ($8,500) – I don’t know why, but I’m feeling a good (if not great) Justin Rose performance this week. He’s won here and been Top 20 four of the six times he’s played this event.
$7,000 to $7,900
- Taylor Moore ($7,900)** – Yet to make a cut at Colonial, but yet to miss a cut this year. Course history of two years isn’t enough to push me off him here. I’ll take the made cut, say thank you, and wait for my guys to collapse on Sunday. (I’m kidding but that’s been my MO this year).
- Austin Eckroat ($7,500) – I’m starting to really like his play. Last Four: T18-63rd-T11-17th.
- Ryan Fox ($7,300)
- Lee Hodges ($7,200) – T12 last week even with a penalty. T24 the week before. Made the cut both times he’s played here.
- Lucas Glover ($7,500)
- Robert Macintyre ($7,000)
Under $7,000
- Gary Woodland ($6,600)
- Michael Kim ($6,500)
- Sam Stevens ($6,800)
- Seonghyeon (SH) Kim ($6,700)
Under $6,000
- Parker Coody ($5,900)
- Garrick Higgo ($5,600)
- Joel Dahmen ($5,500) – not killing it, but made four cuts in a row. At this price, that’s all you need.
Longshot(s)
- Alejandro Tosti ($6,300) – He is showing signs of life – and comfort – on the PGA Tour. He’s sporadic, but I think he does well this week!
- Andrew Novak ($6,300) – made 7/8 cuts this year with three Top 20s. T40 here last year.
