PGA Dew Sweeper: Wells Fargo Champ

Wells Fargo Championship

Here we go with another “signature” or “elevated” event!  However, Ludvig Aberg had to withdraw with a knee injury and, since my favorite “non-Scottie” play isn’t there, to Hell with it!  You’re on your own this week!

Nah, I wouldn’t do that to you!

Highlights:  Harbour Town Golf Links

  • Par 71 – 7,558 yards
  • Narrow fairways and fast greens
  • Greens are POA and Bermuda
  • Off-the-Tee accuracy will be important with some long rough, trees, water and the like.  7 or 8 holes have water that comes into play.  However, don’t completely rule out the Bomber because, historically, they have had success – and it’s a relatively long course.

NOTE:  THIS IS AN ELEVATED EVENT with a LIMITED FIELD.  NO CUT!!!  No need for a lot of “fluff analysis”.

NOTE:  All pricing is based on DraftKings

$10,000 and Above (in my order of preference)

  • Ludvig Aberg ($10,300) – I love this guy!  But, he withdrew.  Hopefully it’s a minor thing with the knee.
  • Xander Schauffele ($11,500)
  • Wyndham Clark ($10,500) – Cheaper than the other two and I don’t think you lose much by saving the $1,000 +
  • Rory McIlroy ($11,800) – little too much for me.

$9,000 to $9,900 (Ranking all the guys in my order of preference)

  • Patrick Cantlay ($9,800)
  • Max Homa ($9,400)
  • Collin Morikawa ($9,300)
  • Viktor Hovland ($9,200) – he just hasn’t been playing as much
  • Sahith Theegala ($9,100) – lowest priced in this tier and likely an under the radar play
  • Tommy Fleetwood ($9,500) – he could be the wild card in this group.  He has to win on Tour at some point…right?

$8,000 to $8,900

  • Cameron Young ($8,800)**
  • Alex Noren ($8,200)**
  • Si Woo Kim ($8,600)
  • Tony Finau ($8,000) – a relatively accurate “bomber”.  He could surprise this week.

Justin Thomas ($8,500) and Jordan Spieth ($8,600) are in this group and priced very nicely.  However, my confidence level with these two is not very high right now.  Justin has played this course well in the past so he could right his game on a course he’s comfortable on.  However, I’d much rather have Noren or Kim (Si Woo that is) than Spieth.  That being said, look for Spieth to be Top 10 since I’m off him.

$7,000 to $7,900

  • Will Zalatoris ($7,900)** – this is me going back to another favorite play of mine and hoping his “back issue” withdrawal a couple of weeks ago was just a precautionary move.
  • Corey Conners ($7,800)
  • Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($7,600)
  • Shane Lowry ($7,600)
  • Denny McCarthy ($7,300)
  • J. T. Poston ($7,000)

Under $7,000

  • Taylor Moore  ($6,700) – too low for a guy that hasn’t missed a cut this year.
  • Andrew Putnam ($6,800)
  • Mackenzie Hughes ($6,600)
  • Matthieu Pavon ($6,500)

Essentially, there are a lot of guys under $7K that you can use.

Longshot(s)

  • Kevin Tway ($6,200) – When you have no cut, you can go crazy on your “Longshot” play.  He’s been playing mostly Korn Ferry and some of the minor or alternate events on Tour.  But, he qualified for the CJ Cup with a 3rd at Puntacana!  He finished 9th.  Maybe?  A Top 15 at this price is money!
