Almost August, which means we are getting closer to the weekends shifting to College & Pro Football and away from Baseball.  This is also usually the best sneaky time for MLB DFS, so lets find some gems out there.  Tonight we have a good 13-game Saturday night slate.   WEATHER Big threat of storms in Atlanta, typical Summer stuff down there.  Game probably gets played okay though.     Let’s call this the master of 5 innings slate tonight because there’s so many pitchers going who are capping out around 70 pitches and 5 innings. TOP THREE OPTIONS BRANDON PFAADT — DK:  $6,200 | FD: $6,200 Pfaadt and Orioles top SP prospect Grayson Rodriguez were two hot young names coming into 2023 and both struggled in their initial call-up to the big leagues before going back to the minors to work on things.  Grayson has figured it out and Pfaadt looks to be doing the same.  He’s also going to get a great boost here with Seattle’s strikeout problems even though they have calmed down some over the last week.  My theory on young hitting young also does not work in here because that Seattle lineup besides Julio is a veteran team, If he pitches like he did in Cincinnati he’ll be among the top SP options today. JAMES PAXTON — DK:  $9,900 | FD: $10,400 The Giants are among the bottom 5 teams in hitting over the last week, and do not hit as well at home.  Just a couple soft reasons to be comfortable with Paxton, who is continuing to have a good season and continues to do well vs RHH with a near 33% strikeout rate.  Given the Giants are likely to roll out a bunch of RHH blindly I like him to have a good game. Everyone is playing today, which is great news after most of the league had Thursday off to sit at home and watch Shohei Ohtani absolutely just go bananas on the Detroit Tigers. We’re very close to the trade deadline and players are going to be moving around over the next 2-3 days as teams try to make last minute moves, but I would imagine 80% of the trades will be middle relief 4th/5th starters and very few positional players that have DFS impact on us.  That said, it would be extremely wise of the Cardinals to get what they can for Nolan Arenado and if he does go to the Dodgers then they are the immediate World Series favorite. Quite the breakdown we have today, and so many different start times that FanDuel broke out the ole Express slates at 1PM.  Here’s the rundown on what we’ll be covering from a content perspective. Early (Noon):  Rockies/Nationals, Marlins/Rays, Mariners/Twins, Royals/Guardians, Reds/Brewers Main (7PM): Mets/Yankees, Braves/Red Sox, Cubs/White Sox, Rangers/Astros, Athletics/Giants   WEATHER All clear   MY NUMBER ONE JOE RYAN (DK:  $10,700,   FD: $10,000) Is Joelan Ryan back?  He has been really good at home his last two outings in Target Field and the Mariners being the worst K% team in the league, especially vs RHP of late makes this an impossible fade on a short 5 game slate. Truthfully, there is no such thing as an impossible fade in MLB DFS and the way I am going with Seattle right now, you should probably just do opposite what my gut says.  The fear of a Suarez or Hernandez homer lingers, but I doubt they’re more than solo shots — which you can definitely live with when the pitcher is likely posting a 10 spot on strikeouts.   SECONDARY OPTIONS JAKE IRVIN (DK:  $5,300, FD: $7,000) You give me someone throwing 100+ pitches against the Rockies for 5300 and I am in and when Irvin is pitching well he usually will put up a very good score, so we’re looking at a goose egg or a slate winner, and that’s worth taking a bite on with limited choices.  His worst pitch at times has been his breaking ball which Colorado ranks 28th among all teams.  The Nats pen has been horrendous and could use some length here today too.   OTHER NOTES The alternative pivot on Irvin is going to be a chalky Gavin Williams against the lowly Royals — they have seen him and they should hit him in a warm Cleveland game which I project to go over by a mile.   FAVORITE CORES … GUARDIANS & ROYALS Game stack building on a short 5 game slate, let’s ride with the … Royals and Guardians???  Yes!  Cleveland is the easy sell job I am sure for you, Marsh is not going to strike out more than 2-3 of them and I would really like to get the correct Naylor here today, so Josh please go back to back with Jose Ramirez — thank you. COL @ WSH – Yep.  This is one of those classic Natioanls rain delays where they leave the Skittles Tarp on the field for 3 hours while it is NOT raining and then suddenly decide to PPD the game because they’ve collected enough Beer and bad Ben’s Chili sales on the concourse.  Buyer beware here folks.   Here’s the great news today folks.  There is just ONE Asian born pitchers that I can write up, which is a great thing since they seem to really HATE me with a passion and no, I am not gonna use Julio Urias today.   MY NUMBER ONE JUSTIN VERLANDER (DK: $9100, FD: $9600) Rain could be a concern, but they’ll get the game in & Verlander in Yankee Stadium is a show up spot even for the old man.   SECONDARY OPTIONS KYLE HENDRICKS (DK: 6800, FD: $8300) Here’s the good news folks, he isn’t Asian, so I feel comfortable making him the #1 SP2 today.  This is the other in city rivalry series as the Cubs visit the White Sox but and much like the NY one there is ZERO buzz here between two teams going nowhere in the second half of the season.  The White Sox have faced some good strikeout arms lately, which is one reason they grade poorly over the last week and Hendricks gets a boost — but I think it should continue here and finding the cheaper pitcher is the first thing that jumped out at me today allowing for some options for those building more than one lineup with the high $ pitchers. AARON CIVALE (DK: $7200) I doubt the Royals have figured out Civale, who dominated them right before the all-star break and with his depth of pitches should keep them off balance here today again.   OTHER NOTES We follow up the Pirates and Pares game last night with two Dick’s going today, Rich Hill and Blake Snell.
